Born to Run is the third album by the American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen. It was released on August 25, 1975 through Columbia Records. It captured the heaviness of Springsteen's earlier releases while displaying a more diverse range of influences.

With this album, Springsteen finally achieved what had eluded him with his first two: both critical and commercial success. Tracks like "Born To Run," "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," "Jungleland" and "Thunder Road" have since become classic rock standards. Where his first albums had been recorded on the cheap in less than a week, this one took more than a year. Columbia Records made a huge investment in producing and promoting the album, considering it Springsteen's last chance to make it big. The investment paid off, as the album is now in the Library of Congress registry of historic recordings. 

Born to Run was a critical and commercial success and became Springsteen's breakthrough album. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, eventually selling six million copies in the US by the year 2000. Two singles were released from the album: "Born to Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out"; the first helped Springsteen to reach mainstream popularity. The tracks "Thunder Road" and "Jungleland" became staples of album-oriented rock radio and Springsteen concert high points.

It entered the album chart three times: when it was released, ten years later when Born In The U.S.A. was released, and again in 2005 when the 30th anniversary edition was released.

En el 2004 un jurado compuesto por expertos en preservación de música y sonido de los Estados Unidos la anexó en el Registro Nacional de Grabaciones de la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados Unidos debido a su "significancia cultural o histórica" en la vida norteamericana. El 14 de noviembre de 2005 se puso en circulación la edición de "30o Aniversario" que incluye una versión remasterizada del disco y dos DVD, uno conteniendo un filme de la producción de Born to Run y otro con un concierto.

Musicalement, Springsteen adopte un style plus dur que précédemment en forçant sa voix. Beaucoup de cuivres accompagnent la trame, on assiste à une sorte d'opéra pop du nouveau monde, avec des éléments indissociables de l'Amérique. L'album préfigure le suivant (Darkness on the Edge of Town) bien que beaucoup plus gai et donc plus accessible, mais par là en même temps moins touchant et moins percutant.

Bruce Springsteens drittes Album, Born to Run, war sein Durchbruch in den USA und weltweit. Ernest „Boom“ Carter und David Sancious verließen die Band, nachdem sie den Titelsong Born To Run aufgenommen hatten. Nach einem Casting von etwa 30 Schlagzeugern und 30 Pianisten wurden Roy Bittan und Max Weinberg in die Band aufgenommen. Ebenso wurde Steven Van Zandt während der Arbeiten an dem Album ein offizielles Mitglied der E Street Band. Obwohl Springsteens erste beiden Alben Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. und The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle gute Kritiken bekommen hatten, war der kommerzielle Erfolg ausgeblieben. Somit stand Bruce Springsteen unter enormen Druck, während er Born To Run aufnahm, da ein eventueller Misserfolg das Ende seiner Plattenkarriere hätte sein können.

Born To Run ist außerdem für seinen Wall of Sound bekannt. Das bedeutet, dass die Songs eine enorme Dichte haben (Piano, Glockenspiel, Saxophon, Gitarren, Bläser, Drums, Bass, Fender Rhodes, Tamburin, Streicher, Synthesizer). Springsteen wollte laut eigener Aussage, dass sich Born To Run so anhört, als ob Roy Orbison die Songs von Bob Dylan singen würde.

Das Konzept des Albums ist das Thema Flucht (aus dem alten Leben zu fliehen und woanders neu anzufangen). Dieses Thema zieht sich durch das gesamte Album. Springsteen sagte dazu: „'Born To Run' hat die Stimmung eines endlosen Sommerabends. Die ganze Platte hat diese Atmosphäre. Es könnte sich alles an einem einzigen Abend ereignen und an all diesen unterschiedlichen Orten. All diese verschiedenen Geschichten an einem einzigen langen Sommerabend.“

Nach der Veröffentlichung erreichte das Album Position 3 der Billboard-Charts und konnte sich mehr als zwei Jahre in den Top 100 halten. Born To Run brachte Springsteen in derselben Woche auf das Cover der Times („Die neue Sensation des Rock“) und der Newsweek („Ein Rockstar wird geboren“). Bis zum Jahr 2006 wurden mehr als sechs Millionen Alben verkauft, so dass das Album Springsteens am zweithäufigsten verkauftes Studioalbum nach Born in the U.S.A. ist.

Albumet innebar Springsteens stora genombrott, efter två album som visserligen fått bra kritik men inte sålt särskilt bra. "Born To Run" A Rock-history icon!

Written at 7½ West End Court in Long Branch, New Jersey in early 1974, the song was Bruce Springsteen's last-ditch effort to make it big. The prior year, Springsteen had released two albums to critical acclaim but with little commercial success. The lyrics to the song are appropriately epic for his last-ditch, all-or-nothing shot at the stars, yet they remain rooted in the universal desperation of adolescence: Will you walk with me out on the wire, cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider...We gotta get out while we're young, 'cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run.'

Written in the first person, the song is a love letter to a girl named Wendy (Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend I wanna guard your dreams and visions...; I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight/in an everlasting kiss!), for whom the hot-rod-riding protagonist certainly has enough passion to love, but perhaps not the patience. However, Springsteen has noted that it has a much simpler core: getting out of Freehold, New Jersy].

In his 1996 book Songs, Springsteen relates that while the beginning of the song was written on guitar around the opening riff, the song's writing was finished on piano, the instrument that most of the Born to Run album was composed on.

In the period prior to the release of Born to Run Springsteen was becoming well known (especially in his native northeast) for his epic live shows. "Born to Run" joined his concert repertoire well before the release of the album, being performed in concert by May 1974 if not earlier.

(The first recording of the song was made by Allan Clarke of the British group The Hollies, although its release was delayed, only appearing after Springsteen's own now-famous version.)
