Reggatta de Blanc ist das zweite Studioalbum von The Police. Es erschien im Oktober 1979 bei A&M Records. Das Album erreichte Platz eins der Charts in Großbritannien und in Australien, in den USA Platz 25. 1980 gewann die Band für das Titelstück den Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Reggatta de Blanc is the second album by The Police, released in 1979. It features the band's first two number 1 hits, "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon".

Reggatta de Blanc took four weeks to record, spaced over several months. Unlike its successor, Zenyatta Mondatta, there was no pressure on the band. Stewart Copeland described it, "We just went into the studio and said, 'Right, who's got the first song?' We hadn't even rehearsed them before we went in."

Against the wishes of A&M, who had wanted to equip the promising band with a bigger studio and more famous producer, the Police opted to again record at Surrey Sound with Nigel Gray. The small budget (between £6,000 and £9,000) was easily covered by the profits of their previous album, Outlandos d'Amour, further ensuring that the record label would have no control over the actual creation of the band's music.

Whereas Outlandos d'Amour had benefited from one of the most prolific songwriting periods of Sting's life, the recording sessions for Reggatta de Blanc were so short on new material that the band even considered re-recording "Fall Out" at one point. To fill in the gaps, Sting and Copeland dug up old songs they'd written and used elements of them to create new songs. Much of the lyrics to "Bring on the Night" were recycled from Sting's Last Exit song "Carrion Prince (O Ye of Little Hope)", and "The Bed's Too Big Without You" similarly started as a Last Exit tune, while "Does Everyone Stare" originates from a piano piece Copeland wrote in college.

The album's title is a pseudo-French translation of "white reggae".

La importancia del álbum, radica en que The Police demostró ser una banda integrada por tres excelsos músicos con diversas escuelas musicales fusionadas para un fin común. Incluye temas considerados como verdaderas “obras de arte” dentro de la carrera musical del grupo.

Reggatta De Blanc, es considerado el mejor álbum "New Wave" de la historia, junto con el álbum London Calling de The Clash.

El álbum fue grabado en consola de 24 canales en los estudios "Surrey Sound Studios". Y como bien lo indica su título, tiene una fuerte influencia del reggae particularmente expresado en varios temas como en "Walking On The Moon", que luego fue lanzado como sencillo y llegó al primer puesto en el UK singles chart.

El disco tiene otro impresionante sencillo que llegó al número uno en el chart británico: "Message In A Bottle". Otros temas que destacaron fueron: "Reggatta De Blanc" que recibió el premio Grammy en 1981 a mejor interpretación instrumental. "Deathwish" emotiva canción New Wave; "Bring On The Night", una canción que trata sobre la ejecución de Gary Gilmore. Así como, "It's Alright For You" que muestra plenamente la influencia Punk en la música de The Police. Y por último, la candente "The Bed's Too Big Without You", impecable fusión de Reggae y gran aportación policiaca al mundo del rock.

En cuanto a la estructura y composición de las canciones, es el disco de The Police en donde mejor participan sus tres integrantes de forma equitativa y brillante. Podemos escuchar a un Sting con gran voz y ejecución del bajo; a un Stewart Copeland con una batería mágica, fenomenal y bestial (su mejor trabajo de estudio con la banda) y a un Andy Summers con una guitarra "atrevida y rockera" (como en el primer álbum "Outlandos d' Amour"), no tan "atmosférica".

Mentre Outlandos D'Amour fece conoscere al mondo il trio, Regatta de Blanc del 1979 contribuì a confermare i Police come star. Spesso considerato il miglior album di Sting, Stuart Copeland e Andy Summers, Regatta... è più atmosferico del debutto della band, meno punk e più controllato.

Questo secondo album è l'SOS della band al mondo, con il singolo ''Message in a Bottle'' che riceve il suo riscontro, occupando il primo posto della classifica britannica per quattro settimane. La chitarra arpeggiata e flangiata, marchio di fabbrica di Summers, apre il brano e l'album e si intreccia con facilità all'immaginario tagliente di Sting.

''Message...'' non è l'unico trionfo commerciale dell'album. ''Walking On The Moon'' mescola ritmi reggae con i testi schietti e sobri in cui i Police eccellono. Anche questa canzone è arrivata al primo posto.

Altri ritmi dub seguono in ''The Bed's Too Big Without You'', ma questa volta con un effetto più soporifero. Riporta la dolcezza nell'album (e in seguito è stata coverizzata dalla cantante reggae Sheila Hilton nel 1981). Ricorda cosa significhi sentire la mancanza di un partner.

Ma a volte i ragazzi si distaccano dalle loro influenze reggae. Quello che si ottiene ascoltando la title track è un miscuglio di world music - una frenesia indefinibile senza parole che suona come se i ragazzi si stessero divertendo e che finisce troppo presto.

Come sempre, i testi di Sting sono molto più profondi di quanto sembrino. La sua voce strozzata e le chitarre echeggianti di "Bring On The Night" incarnano il desiderio di un uomo di giungere alla fine del suo tempo. Il verso "The evening spreads itself against the sky" (La sera si stende contro il cielo) è inconsapevolmente tratto da "The Love Song Of J Alfred Prufrock" (Il canto d'amore di J. Alfred Prufrock) di TS Eliot, una poesia che tratta a sua volta di frustrazione e alienazione.

Tre brani di Copeland, ''Does Everyone Stare'', ''Contact'' e ''On Any Other Day'', si distinguono per la loro discordanza e il loro umorismo nero. I primi due si concentrano sullo spazio che esiste tra gli individui, mentre lo stesso batterista si occupa della voce in "On Any Other Day", un'interpretazione umoristica della crisi di mezza età.

Regatta de Blanc non poteva che venire dopo Outlandos D'Amour. I valori di produzione sono più alti, più intricati e alcune musiche sono più adulte - incorporando influenze di world music e jazz, oltre che di reggae e roots.

"Walking on the Moon" is a song by English rock band The Police, released as the second single from their second studio album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979). The song was written by the band's lead vocalist and bassist Sting when he was drunk. It has since become a number one UK hit for the band, and it has appeared on numerous compilation albums.

The song has also been covered by numerous musicians, including Christian McBride, Intwine, and William Shatner.

Sting said that he wrote the song when he was drunk one night after a concert in Munich. That following morning, he remembered the song and wrote it down.

I was drunk in a hotel room in Munich, slumped on the bed with the whirling pit when this riff came into my head. I got up and started walking round the room, singing 'Walking round the room, ya, ya, walking round the room'. That was all. In the cool light of morning I remembered what had happened and I wrote the riff down. But 'Walking Round the Room' was a stupid title so I thought of something even more stupid which was 'Walking on the Moon'.

In his autobiography, Sting alludes that the song was partially inspired by an early girlfriend:

Deborah Anderson was my first real girlfriend...walking back from Deborah's house in those early days would eventually become a song, for being in love is to be relieved of gravity.

According to Sting, the song was originally recorded "as a rocker" in early versions, but it was reworked. The riff, which is played on the bass, was described as "weird" and "jazzy" by Sting. The chord "which hits after the bass notes" throughout the song, was invented by guitarist Andy Summers.

"Walking on the Moon" was released as the follow-up single to the British number one single, "Message in a Bottle," in late 1979. The song was The Police's second number-one hit single in the United Kingdom. It also reached number one in Ireland and number nine in Australia but the single didn't chart in the United States.

The B-side to the song, "Visions of the Night," was written by Sting. Sting said of the song, "This was the first song I wrote after going to London. It was hard to be serious about the whole thing. I was bemused, much to Stewart 's disgust." According to Copeland, the song was "too cerebral for  early audiences," so Sting would call it 'Three O'Clock Shit', the title of a rejected Police song that appears as 'Three O'Clock Shot' on Strontium 90: Police Academy.

A music video for the song was shot at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 23 October 1979. It features the band members miming to the track amidst spacecraft displays, interspersed with NASA footage. Both Sting and Andy Summers strum guitars (not bass) in the video, and Stewart Copeland strikes his drumsticks on a Saturn V moon rocket.

"Walking on the Moon" has a "sparse" arrangement, centred around a four note bass riff. Sting performs lead vocals on the song. It is one of The Police's more reggae-influenced songs.
